Captain Ahab makes his ominous first appearance to the crew, standing solitary and authoritative on his quarterdeck, and affects Ishmael with his intense, brooding presence.

Ishmael observes the mysterious absence and eventual emergence of Captain Ahab on the Pequod. Initially unseen, Ahab's presence is felt through abrupt orders emerging from his cabin. Ishmael's unease about the captain increases, amplified by thoughts of Elijah's prophecies. The crew, a motley and heathenish group, and the ship's competent American mates inspire confidence in the voyage. Yet it is Ahab's first shocking appearance on deck which leaves a profound impact, revealing his fierce and unbending demeanor. His scorched face and lividly branded, lightning-struck appearance, along with a white leg made from whale bone, incite a spectrum of reactions and somber tales among the crew about its origin. Ahab's dominant and enigmatic presence exhibits an unshakeable resolve, as the crew operates under his penetrating gaze. Over time, the improving weather seems to moderate Ahab's reclusiveness, and he begins to spend more time on the deck, responding ever so slightly to the sea's milder disposition.
