Chapter 11 depicts a cozy, intimate scene where Ishmael and Queequeg are lying in bed. They chat and take short naps, with Queequeg at times affectionately draping his legs over Ishmael, indicating a deepening friendship. As they become fully awake, the comfort of bed becomes tedious, leading them to sit up, still wrapped in bedclothes. Ishmael reflects on the nature of comfort and warmth, which he philosophizes is best enjoyed with a mix of cold. Opening his eyes after lying in the dark, he is uncomfortable with the outer gloom and Queequeg suggests lighting a lamp for a smoke. Ishmael is now more accepting of Queequeg's smoking habits, enjoying the domestic tranquility it brings.
