The Time Traveller moves further into the future, witnessing a dying world inhabited by monstrous crab-like creatures and desolation under a blackened sky.

As the Time Traveller continues his journey, he experiences sickness and disorientation. He inadvertently travels forward rather than backwards, finding himself in a drastically changed, decaying Earth. Days and nights blur into long periods, and the sun becomes a large, reddish orb appearing to stand still in the sky. The moon vanishes, and the Earth eventually stabilizes with one side always facing the sun. Upon stopping, the Time Traveller encounters strange, monstrous crab-like creatures and a barren landscape. Life on Earth seems reduced to these creatures and lichenous plants. The Earth's fate enthralls him, and he travels millions of years into the future. Eventually, he observes the sun, now enormous and partially obscured, and the frozen sea with only a hint of organic life remaining. The horror of the great darkness and the icy cold compels him to return to his own time.
