The Time Traveller reflects on the passive, uninterested Eloi as he explores a future Earth, contemplating the reasons behind the decline of human intellect and the evidence of a society that has achieved a peaceful stasis, possibly to its own detriment.

In Chapter VI, the Time Traveller continues to observe the Eloi and notes their lack of intellectual curiosity and how quickly they lose interest in him. After satisfying his hunger, he leaves the dinner and begins exploring the future Earth at sunset. He discovers significant changes in the landscape and flora, and contemplates the remains of a colossal, decaying structure. He notices the absence of small houses and suspects a communist society. The gender uniformity among the Eloi strikes him; differences in dress and appearance have vanished. He theorizes that, in a world without struggle, the need for traditional gender roles and the family unit has disappeared. Concluding his walk at a crest, the Time Traveller muses that humankind seems to have advanced past the need for struggle or toil, and perhaps civilization has reached a point of decline due to its own accomplishments in eliminating hardship and danger.
